Thoughtful planning is a wonderful gift Creating a Master File How can you "straighten up and die right?" Lots of things should be considered. Like goals you want to accomplish before you die. Remembering to treasure cherished possessions. Gathering your vital papers, including an updated will, and informing significant others where they are filed.Other things to consider include exploring options concerning burial and funeral service options and letting loved ones know your wishes.
And your thoughtful planning does not have to be a huge or intimidating task. I suggest you try something as easy as this: Get some file folders and keep them handy as you read these pages. Then, simply write a subject name on a folder on which you
would like to collect information. Keep your folders in alphabetical order and you are on your way. Over time you will begin to convert the information you are gathering into a plan. When you see magazine articles or news items that pertain to a related subject, or you just have a thought about any of these topics, you will have an organized place to file them. Your folders can be kept in a file cabinet, a box, or a drawer. Or your computer may work best for you. Naming your master file system makes it more personal and more fun. Some of our seminar attendees come up with creative names such as "Last Hurrah;" "Up, Up and Away;" "Dead End;" "Final Exit;" "19th Hole;" "Over My Dead Body;" and "Last Expedition." One of my favorites was by someone who really applied some creativity to the whole package: One for the money - Organizing financial and legal information.
Two for the show - Showing and discussing information with significant others.
Three to get ready - Making end-of-life decisions.
Four to go - Funeral planning. The end.
Dad called his end-of-life plan "My Going-Away Party." Approaching the filing system with a touch of humor reminds us that death is a normal stage of the life and can be prepared for...like we prepare for all other important events. Following is a suggested list of End-of-Life planning files:
